RALEIGH
North Carolina Senate Democrats are wasting little time choosing a new majority leader to replace retiring Sen. Tony Rand.
The Senate Democratic Caucus planned to meet Tuesday morning to name the top lieutenant to Senate leader Marc Basnight, who's been in charge of the chamber since 1993.
The likely choice is Sen. Martin Nesbitt of Buncombe County, who joined the Legislature 30 years ago and became one of the chief budget-writers in the chamber into the 1990s. He joined the Senate in 2004. Basnight endorsed Nesbitt two days after Rand announced he was leaving the General Assembly by year's end to become state parole commission chairman.
No other senators have announced publicly they're running. Senate Democrats will meet privately to choose a successor.
