Q. While looking for a job, I noticed that several applications require a credit check. If an employer checks your credit, does it affect your credit score? What else can you tell me about this process? -- J.A.
A. A prospective employer's checking your credit does not affect your credit score, the experts at Consumer Credit Counseling Services say.
Employers routinely do background checks on job candidates. The checks may indicate how you would perform as an employee.
Credit reports can be one of many items an employer looks at in a candidate's background check, says Cheryl Jeffries, the president of the local chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management.
"Generally, an actual credit check provides information about the candidate's ability to manage financial resources and would most often be part of the background check if the job has significant financial responsibilities or involves the routine handling of money," Jeffries said.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act does not allow an employer to do a credit check unless you agree to it in writing.
