Harrison Barnes, one of the most prized basketball recruits in the country, is headed to North Carolina.
Barnes announced his commitment and signed a binding national letter-of-intent at his high school in Ames, Iowa, shortly after 4:15 p.m. EST Friday.
A 6-6 small forward at Ames High School, he is ranked as the No. 1 senior in the country by analyst Dave Telep of Scout.com, and is No. 2 by analyst Bob Gibbons of All Star Sports in Lenoir.
Barnes went to a lectern at his announcement and made a phone and video connection with Coach Roy Williams over a laptop computer. The image of Williams then appeared on a screen to Barnes' left.
"Well Coach, I know that you're in practice right now, and I need to get going on signing my letter of intent here, but I want to let you know that I'll be joining you guys next year on the squad, and I can't wait to play with all you guys," Barnes said.
Williams had a two-word response: "All right!"
Barnes joins guards Reggie Bullock and Kendall Marshall in the UNC recruiting class.
Barnes father, Ronnie Harris, played basketball at Iowa State in the mid 1980s. His mother, Shirley, now works at the university.
