Q. Can you recommend a good way to donate or recycle books? -- A.M.

A. You can try to either sell or donate your books. If you have rare or collectible books, you may want to first get the advice of a knowledgeable book dealer to get an idea of their value. If you have general-interest books, you can try selling them at a used-book store.

If you are interested in giving away your books, there are many options.

The Shepherd's Center holds a book sale each May to raise money to support its services for older adults. It accepts donations year-round. Books can be taken to the Shepherd's Center at 1700 Ebert St. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or arrangements can be made for pickup of large donations. Call 748-0217 for information.

Friends of the Library groups also accept donations for book sales. Proceeds support library services. A list of local groups is online at www.co.forsyth.nc.us/LIBRARY/friends.aspx.

Other groups that hold rummage sales also accept used books, as do groups that run thrift stores, such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army.

Q. Why is Veterans Day celĀebrated Nov. 11? -- D.M.

A. Fighting during World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The next year, President Woodrow Wilson designated Nov. 11 as Armistice Day. Armistice means truce.

In 1938, Congress established Armistice Day as a holiday for honoring WW I veterans. In 1954, Congress changed the word "Armistice" to "Veterans" to make the holiday a day to honor all war veterans.
