Body found in Salem Lake

Police think man, 60, was cycling yesterday

The body of a 60-year-old man was found floating in Salem Lake yesterday, and Winston-Salem police do not suspect foul play.

Police believe that the man was biking on the trails around the lake, lost control and crashed into the water. A jogger saw the man's body about 8:30 a.m. yesterday, said Lt. Billy Riggs.

The jogger called 911, then dove into the lake and pulled the man's body out, Riggs said.

Police have identified the man but Riggs said police officials are waiting to notify his family before they make his name public.

Riggs said that the man lived in Kernersville.

Police do not know how long the man's body was in the lake, Riggs said, but think it was not more than a few hours. Police said that they think the man arrived at the park to bike early yesterday morning.

Investigators were still searching for the man's bicycle yesterday afternoon.

Police cordoned off a section of the Salem Lake trail to gather evidence yesterday.

The Mercy 5K, a race that benefits Crisis Control Ministry's Free Pharmacy, was still held on the greenway leading to the lake, while police worked.

The man is the second to drown at Salem Lake this year.

In September, a canoeist found the body of Rafael Leroy Wright, 22, floating there.

Wright's death had been the first at the lake in two years.
