Q. My mom and I are trying to find a place to get the seasonal flu vaccine. Our pharmacist, several others we've checked with, and my mom's doctor's office are all out of the vaccine. Is more of the regular flu vaccine coming? -- T.D.
A. Not for this season, says Carole Watson, Immunization Program Manager for the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. "In fact," she said, "some facilities and offices who pre-booked back in the spring are not getting all they ordered. It all went very early this year."
The health department does have seasonal flu vaccine for children from 6 months to 18 years old, along with the H1N1 vaccine for those meeting certain criteria.
People between 2 and 24 years old who do not have chronic health problems and are not pregnant may receive the H1N1 nasal mist vaccine.
The H1N1 injectable vaccine is available to anyone between 6 months and 24 years old, people from 25 to 64 years old who have a chronic health problem, pregnant women, caregivers of infants younger than 6 months, and practicing healthcare workers.
Those who qualify can be immunized on a first-come-first-served basis at a clinic from 1 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the health department, 799 N. Highland Ave. There is no charge.
Surrounding counties may also be holding flu clinics, so contact your local health department for information.
Protect yourself and others from flu:
-Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
-Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also good.
