Hodgkin narrowly defeats Childers in mayoral race

Incumbent John Hodgkin finished with 182 votes, eight votes ahead of challenger Alma Childers, to win the mayoral race in Walnut Cove. In the town's board of commissioners' race, challengers Sharon Conaway and Charles Mitchell won with 198 votes and 151 votes, respectively, according to complete but unofficial results. They beat incumbents Debbie Cowens, who had 68 votes and Kim Lewis, who finished with 114 votes. They also finished ahead of J. Elwood Mabe, who has been chairman of the town's planning and zoning board for several years. He had 142 votes.
