Q. I have heard talk around town about a Persimmon Festival in Colfax. Do you know any details about this festival? I have never heard of it. -- L.H.

A. Your question reminds SAM that there are still two bags of persimmon pulp in the freezer from last year's festival. And now the second annual Colfax Persimmon Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Stafford Farm, 558 N. Bunker Hill Road, about 21/2 miles north of U.S. 421. Admission is a parking fee of $5 a vehicle. The rain date is Nov. 14.

The festival features arts and crafts vendors; food vendors; live music; demonstrations of such crafts as blacksmithing and chainsaw carving; a Civil War encampment; and presentations on Indian artifacts and Revolutionary War-era living and cooking. Of course, persimmon pulp and such persimmon products as pudding, muffins, bread and ice cream will be available. For more information, visit colfaxpersimmonfest.com.

Q. With gas prices once again climbing, it seems the city could easily do a better job of coordinating more efficient traffic flow through stoplights. What is the appropriate office to contact requesting more efficient stoplight timing? -- J.M.

A. The Winston-Salem Department of Transportation is responsible for all traffic lights in the city. "Timing plans are evaluated every six months," the department says, "and specific locations are evaluated based on citizen concerns and complaints." To request a change in traffic-light timing, you can call 727-2707.
