They serve the rest of us
As Election Day approaches, I write this letter with a deep feeling of appreciation toward our elected public servants of all parties. They truly serve the rest of us, and their reward is all too puny in comparison to the time and effort they put into their official positions. As three Winston-Salem City Council members complete their time of service, we owe a large debt of gratitude to Nelson Malloy, Joycelyn Johnson and Evelyn Terry.
When I hear folks complain about regulations, rules and taxes, I recognize our culture's time-honored admiration of rugged individualism. Others believe it is best for everyone to give up a little for the benefit and advancement of the many. It is hard to argue with either of these beliefs. Ted Shipley seems to support the former ideal and Dan Besse the latter. If elected, Shipley may turn out to be a talented legislator. Besse has already demonstrated that he is.
When the votes are counted on Nov. 3, we will know how the citizens of the Southwest Ward have chosen. Whoever wins, I hope that in the future we can confine our disagreements to the policies being promoted, rather than making personal attacks on the candidates themselves. After all, they are performing a duty few of us would be willing or able to take on.
