Q. A reader whose husband was injured and out of work recently asked SAM about where to turn to get help with Christmas gifts for her children. Your response mentioned the Salvation Army and other organizations. My wife and I would love to help. Please tell us how. -- A.M.
A. The Salvation Army offers numerous opportunities.
You can sponsor an "angel" from the Angel Tree at Hanes Mall, pick up a stocking to fill at Wachovia Bank or Chick-Fil-A, or purchase a Lowes Food Store gift card to sponsor a senior citizen's Christmas dinner. You can sort coats or help out at the toy shop. Call 245-2075 to match your interests with an opportunity to help.
The Children's Home needs toys, clothes and other gifts for children and teenagers. Find more information at www.tchome.org.
The Family Support Network needs donations and volunteers for Breakfast with Santa for children with special needs. The breakfast will be held Dec. 5. Call 924-5301.
Operation Christmas Tree needs trees, tree stands and volunteers to distribute trees on Dec. 19. Call Ted Freshwater at 998-2394.
These local agencies, as well as many others, need donations and volunteers to provide services not only during the holidays, but throughout the year. The Winston-Salem Journal's annual holiday guide, which will be published the day after Thanksgiving, will include an extensive list of organizations in Northwest North Carolina that need volunteers and donations.
