A flash-flood watch remains in effect this morning for Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties.
Overnight rains were also expected to cause potential for some localized flooding in Forsyth County.
Officials said that people should not try to drive through flooded roads. A small amount of water is enough to sweep a vehicle off the roadway, they said.
The heavy rains, including those that caused localized flooding in Wilkes County yesterday, are from a stream of tropical Atlantic moisture that has shifted farther north than usual, said Jan Jackson, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's office in Blacksburg, Va.
The system dropped 5 to 6 inches of rain in a few hours early yesterday in Wilkes County.
Although rain remains in the forecast for the rest of the week, Jackson said, the heavy tropical rains should be ending today. The tropical air that left so much rain in Wilkes County is part of the same weather pattern that caused flooding in Daytona Beach and other parts of Florida last week.
There is a 70 percent chance of rain today in Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes counties.
The forecast for Winston-Salem calls for a 50 percent chance of rain today, a 60 percent chance of rain Thursday and a 40 percent chance of rain Friday. Saturday should be mostly sunny.
