LEXINGTON -- A 45-year-old Lexington man was charged Thursday with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl several times four years ago, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office said yesterday.
The girl, now 16, contacted Davidson County Child Protective Services on Wednesday and reported that she had been abused, the sheriff's office said. She said that the assaults happened over several months.
After an investigation, detectives alleged that David Author Baker Sr. of 229 Sycamore St. in Lexington raped and committed sexual offenses against the girl between Jan. 1, 2005, and Aug. 1, 2005.
Baker turned himself in to the sheriff's office Thursday. He was charged with nine counts of first-degree rape of a child and eight counts of first-degree sex offense of a child.
He was being held in the Davidson County Jail, with bond set at $500,000. He is scheduled to appear in Davidson District Court on June 15.
Homeless man was crushed with trash, autopsy reveals
WILMINGTON -- An autopsy confirmed that a homeless man in Wilmington died from crushing injuries before his body was dumped in a waste pit.
The Wilmington Star-News reported that officials said Thursday that 42-year-old Berry O'Neal Carter was crushed. Investigators say they think that Carter was sleeping in a trash bin that was picked up by a truck and compacted on April 9.
The truck driver told officials that he heard a strange noise that morning.
The autopsy said that Carter's death was accidental and that alcohol intoxication contributed to it.
