Natural-gas leak causes evacuation of two businesses in Elkin

»  Comments | Post a Comment

ELKIN — Authorities evacuated two businesses and closed a section of North Bridge Street this morning when natural gas leaked from a pipeline along the street. No one was injured, and there was no fire.

Tom Wheeler, the chief of the Elkin Fire Department, said that leak began shortly after 9:15 when a company installing fiber-optic cable cut the pipeline carrying the natural gas.

Seven people were evacuated from an Auto Zone store and nearby office building on North Bridge Street, Wheeler said. Employees with Frontier Natural Gas Co. repaired the pipeline and stopped the link.

The street was reopened to traffic around 11:15, Wheeler said.
