West Jefferson given $20,000 for bike paths
State transportation officials have awarded West Jefferson $20,000 for bicycle and pedestrian planning.
The money was part of a $315,850 pot that went to 12 municipalities across the state.
The grants are not limited to specific projects, but are given to communities that have an overall strategy for expanding bicycle and pedestrian opportunities.
The grant initiative is jointly sponsored by the N.C. Department of Transportation's division of bicycle and pedestrian transportation and NCDOT's transportation planning branch. The planning money came from a special allocation approved by the General Assembly in 2003, as well as federal funds designated for bicycle and pedestrian planning
Since 2004, 92 municipalities have been awarded the grants. Local matching funds are required.
