An East Bend woman died in a traffic accident Friday night, Winston-Salem police said.
Debbie Denise Spainhour, 46, was driving her 1981 Chevy Camaro southwest on Bethania-Rural Hall Road about 8:27 p.m. when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2002 Buick Park Avenue being driven by Carl H. Gill Jr., 59.
Spainhour was pronounced dead at the scene. Gill and a passenger in his vehicle, Vianey S. Desolis, 37, were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Gill and Desolis were not listed as patients last night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Neither speed nor alcohol appear to have played a part in the crash, police said. The investigation is continuing.
Another robbery occurs in Jonestown Road area
Winston-Salem police are investigating the armed robbery of a McDonald's on Jonestown Road last night.
Police said that shortly before 7:30, a man came into the restaurant at 426 Jonestown Road, showed a handgun and demanded money. After getting the money, he left with a woman who was waiting outside, police said. The suspects left the area on foot.
Police believe the robbery may be connected to several others that happened last week at businesses within a two-mile area along Jonestown Road., near the interchange with U.S. 421. On Thursday night, a man and two women also tried to rob a convenience store on Country Club Road.
The suspects are described as black male, 18 to 20 years old, about 6 feet to 6 feet, two inches tall, wearing a black-and-white pullover and red shorts, and a black female, 18 to 20 years old, wearing a black skirt.
Kaine says N.C.'s vote for Obama was surprise
DURHAM -- Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine said that North Carolina surprised the nation when it voted for Barack Obama in the November presidential election.
Kaine, who is also the Democratic National Committee chairman, told a Democratic dinner last night that Obama's win over Republican John McCain in North Carolina "wasn't expected." Kaine said that Democrats have to work hard to maintain the momentum from 2008, keep people engaged and add more voters to their side.
Kaine was named chairman of the party in January by President Obama. He spoke to an audience of more than 640 at the state's annual Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner.
Gov. Bev Perdue and other elected leaders also spoke.
State patrol investigates warning for 102 mph
RALEIGH -- The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating a traffic stop where a North Carolina legislator received a warning after being clocked at 102 mph in a 65 mph zone.
Troopers issued a ticket Friday to Rep. Cary Allred, four days after he was pulled over near where Interstates 40 and 85 split in Orange County, the Raleigh News & Observer reported.
Allred said he was accelerating to make sure he stayed on I-40 and told the trooper he was trying to get to the legislature to vote. Allred, R-Alamance, said he showed his legislative ID and trooper N.A. Mitchell gave him a warning and told him to slow down.
DA clears police officer in fatal shooting of boy
MAXTON -- Prosecutors said they will not file charges against a Maxton police officer who shot and killed a 15-year-old boy last September.
Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt decided last month that Detective Jamie Oxendine was justified because he thought the teen had a gun, the Fayetteville Observer reported.
Britt said that Oxendine was investigating an armed robbery and the description of the suspect matched Shawn Wright, the boy who was killed.
