Forsyth County Republicans picked Kernersville resident Nathan Tabor on Saturday to lead the county Republican party for a two-year term. He replaces Bill Miller who announced earlier in the year that he will not run again after serving eight years.
Tabor was chosen in a secret ballot during the party's annual convention, on the west campus of Forsyth Technical Community College.
Jerry Jordan, the GOP's representative on the county board of elections, was also in the running for the chairmanship.
The results of the ballot were not announced.
Tabor, 35, is the chief executive officer and president of Act Media Inc., under which he operates businesses that include an Internet branding and marketing business, a used-car business and ownership of some apartment complexes.
Tabor stressed party unity in a statement that said the party would focus on "educating voters on what Democrats are doing to the hardworking, overtaxed individuals of Forsyth County."
But he said that Democrats have been better than Republicans at using technology to reach voters, and said the GOP has to take steps to eliminate that gap.
Tabor created a Facebook group for the Forsyth County GOP after his selection as the party's leader. More than 167 people had joined the Facebook group since Saturday night, party officials said.
Tabor also said the Republican Party has to "organize, rebuild and rebrand our party."
Jordan called Tabor "a fine young man" and said he would do a good job as head of the local party. He said the GOP at every level needs to "unify the party and heal some fractures."
Tabor has run for elected office twice. He didn't win either time.
In 2004, he placed fifth in a crowded field of Republicans competing for the party's nomination for the Fifth Congressional District. Tabor threw his support behind Virginia Foxx, who beat Vernon Robinson in the GOP runoff and went on to win the congressional seat. Robinson was one of those nominating Tabor on Saturday -- along with District Attorney Tom Keith, Joyce Krawiec and Rita Harker.
In 2006, Tabor came in second place behind Pete Brunstetter in a three-candidate GOP primary that Brunstetter won. Brunstetter was unopposed in the general election.
On Saturday, the Forsyth County GOP also unanimously picked the following officers: Pat Bryan as vice-chairwoman, Penn Broyhill as secretary, Ken Raymond as treasurer and Donna Averitt as vice-treasurer.
