Regional Briefs: Man is given 5 to 7 years in shooting death

A Winston-Salem man was sentenced yesterday to five to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and habitual felon charges in Forsyth Superior Court.

Shawn Deandre Carter, 35, pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal.

Carter shot Shavayae Daniels, 18, on the night of July 29, 2004. Daniels and three friends were out that night robbing drug dealers when they came across Carter in the 1100 block of Apple Street in West Salem, David Hall, an assistant district attorney, told Judge Todd Burke.

Pointing a gun, Daniels walked up to Carter, but he turned and ran when Carter pulled out a gun. He was "several yards" away from Carter's house when Carter shot four times, hitting Daniels in the back, Hall said.

Daniels was found in the road holding a 9 mm gun that didn't work.

Daniels' family members said they were disappointed that Carter did not apologize in court.

"It would have changed both of y'alls lives if you hadn't pulled that trigger," said Tracy Daniels, Shavayae Daniels' mother. "It's the family that has to live with what you do."

Bill to make Grandfather a state park moves in Senate

RALEIGH -- An N.C. Senate committee approved a bill Thursday to make Grandfather Mountain a state park.

The state will acquire 2,456 acres to make Grandfather Mountain its 34th state park. The agreement includes a 749-acre conservation easement that will remain owned by the family of the late Hugh Morton -- land that contains the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, the nature museum and the wildlife habitat.

The conversion of Grandfather Mountain to a state park was initiated by former Gov. Mike Easley last year and was approved in January by the Council of State, a panel of top officials in the executive branch.

The last step is approval by the General Assembly.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Joe Sam Queen, D-Haywood, was unanimously approved by the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources.

Two N.C. Freightliner plants will lay off about 500 workers

About 500 employees at two Freightliner plants in North Carolina will be laid off because of declining new truck orders.

Daimler Trucks North America of Portland, Ore., said that the layoffs at its Freightliner manufacturing plant in Cleveland in Rowan County and its components and logistics plant in Gastonia will take effect May 8.

Company officials filed notification of the layoffs to state officials under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, the company said. The company told union officials and affected employees at the plants about the layoffs.

Daimler Trucks announced in early January that its plant in Cleveland will end its second shift on March 13, affecting 1,290 employees. The company said that 420 more employees will lose their jobs in May. The company also had said that it planned to lay off 275 employees at its plant in Gastonia on March 13. The company said that 80 more employees will be laid off in May.
