Q.I have been receiving phone calls with a recorded voice saying, "This is FMS; we have a call for you." I don't know what else it says because I always hang up. Do you know who FMS is? We get a lot of calls from collection agencies for people with our name and wondered if this is another one. -- R.L.

A.There is a "receivables management" company called FMS Inc. based in Tulsa, Okla. (Receivables management is another term for debt collection.)

As you suspect, the calls could be the result of mistaken identity. But collection calls about debts that really don't belong to you could also be a tip off to stolen identity.

According to the N.C. Department of Justice Web site, www.ncdoj.gov, "Some people don't find out that they're a victim of ID theft until debt collectors start calling."

The site offers an ID Theft Victim Kit for those folks.

The Web site also states the rules that collection agencies must follow in their efforts to collect legitimate debts.

To complain about a debt collector, call 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
