A group of non-profit agencies in Winston-Salem will break ground today on a $1.5 million apartment complex that will serve poor people with disabilities.
Hunters Hill Apartments will be built on a vacant lot on Hutton Street, close to Latham School in the city's West Salem neighborhood. The complex will have 12 one-bedroom apartments, a community building, a community garden and a part-time onsite manager.
Residents of the complex must meet strict criteria, including have a documented disability, income at or below 30 percent of the area median income and a source of income such as Social Security Disability Insurance.
The project is being paid for mostly with a loan from the N.C. Housing Finance Agency. The agency will receive money from the Housing 400 Initiative, a program created by the General Assembly to build affordable housing for the disabled.
