A 75-year-old woman died yesterday as a result of injuries she suffered when she struck a car on Patterson Avenue that had turned in front of her, Winston-Salem police said.

Police said the death of Irmhild Michalews Berndt, of 3255 Plantation Road, was the city's 12th traffic fatality for the year, compared to five at this time last year.

Berndt was driving south on Patterson Avenue about 5:30 p.m. when a northbound vehicle driven by Joshua Scott Wallace failed to yield the right-of-way and made a left turn onto Kevin Drive in front of Berndt's car.

Berndt, Wallace, 33, and Douglas Wayne Smith, 35, a passenger in Wallace's car, were all taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for treatment.

Police said neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the collision

Police said the police traffic enforcement unit was investigating the collision.
