Q. The June 17 Winston-Salem Journal article "Lot of Goodness," by Mary Giunca, mentioned callaloo, a variety of greens from the Caribbean. Can you locate a source for callaloo seeds? -- J.S.

A. Callaloo is a common name for a plant from the amaranth family; it is also sometimes referred to as tampala. Depending on the variety, amaranth may be grown for its edible greens, its grains, and/or its flower.

You can order amaranth seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds (www.rareseeds.com, 417-924-8917), Johnny's Selected Seeds (www.johnnyseeds.com, 877-564-6697) or other mail-order seed companies. Your local cooperative extension service is a good source for information.
