Q. Squirrels have been gnawing on the lower area of my new car's bumper, which is made of some kind of plastic. Is there anything I can apply to the bumper to prevent this? -- K.C.
A . A squirrel won't find any nutritional value in a car bumper; but, according to Frank Fowler of McNeely Pest Control, rodents aren't that picky about the surfaces they gnaw on.
They indulge their gnawing instinct to keep their teeth, which are always growing, at a reasonable length.
Putting a hot-pepper-based repellent to the car bumper is the best way to persuade the squirrel to gnaw elsewhere.
Make sure to keep reapplying the repellent so the little critters get the message.
Most home and garden centers carry a selection of such products, and recipes for making your own spray or paste can be found on the Internet. Be aware that some products may stain some surfaces.
