Q. I noticed during a recent trip to the Outer Banks that each ferry carried a logo from a school within the UNC system. What is the affiliation between the ferries and the schools? And are all of the UNC schools recognized by the ferries? -- N.K.

A. Each ferry is indeed affiliated with a state university.

The state has 21 ferries, so there is one for each of the 16 colleges and universities in the UNC system. The other ferries are affiliated with private universities, including Wake Forest, Duke and Shaw.

Each ferry is painted in a university's colors and displays the university's logo.

A photo gallery of the ferries is available on the N.C. Department of Transportation's Web site at www.ncdot.org/transit/ferry/.

When you click on a photo, the image enlarges and gives you information about the university affiliation, weight and dimensions, vehicle and passenger capacities.
