Davidson County deputies found more than 2,300 marijuana plants in the woods in Denton, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office said yesterday in a news release.
Davidson Sheriff David Grice and three deputies walked into the woods Wednesday to investigate an outdoor marijuana operation, and they found nine separate plots of plants, a gravity-fed irrigation system, a loaded 9-mm pistol, and a campsite that could hold three people, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies removed 2,379 marijuana plants ranging from 3 inches to 2 feet high. If the plants had grown to maturity, they would have produced marijuana with a street value of $1,000 to $1,300 per pound, the sheriff's office said.
A person fled into the woods as deputies approached. The sheriff's office is still investigating.
Man charged in armed robbery of Sav-A-Lot store
A Winston-Salem man was charged with armed robbery yesterday in connection with the robbery of a store Tuesday on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, police said.
Arleigh Alexander Bryant, 20, of 1333 Holly Court is accused of being one of two men who robbed Sav-A-Lot store shortly after 8 p.m., police said. Two men had entered the store's office as employees were preparing to close the store for the night.
One of the robbers pointed a gun at the employees and demanded money, police said. The men left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Bryant was being held in the Forsyth County Jail last night, with bond set at $7,500. He is scheduled to appear in court July 10.

Kayakers reunited after fast current separates the group
TROY -- Emergency responders helped a church youth group reunite after a 911 call brought authorities to search a river yesterday.
Laura Morton, a spokeswoman for Montgomery County, said that the group from Stanly County was boating in the Uwharrie River when members were separated and called 911.
Officials said that authorities from neighboring counties and a Highway Patrol helicopter assisted in the search.
The church group, led by a charter company called God's Country Outfitters, was caught off-guard when fast-moving current fed by rainfall upriver separated nine kayakers from the main group, said company owner Nathan Davis.
Authorities were called in when that smaller group, which included two adults, missed a designated takeout point from the river.
Davis said that the smaller group made it to the riverbank about 30 minutes downriver from the takeout point. Nobody was hurt.
Morton said that the group consisted of six adults and 24 children, ages 10 to 12.
The group was near the Uwharrie National Forest.
