Q.I have driven by several workers mowing the grass in medians around the city. The mowers did not have a safety shield covering the mower-discharge opening. Grass clippings, sticks, cans and such fly into the street. I am especially concerned because I ride a motorcycle. Whom should I contact about it? -- J.B.

A.That equipment is mandatory on mowers doing work for the city, James Mitchell, the director of vegetation management for the city, said in an e-mail to SAM.

"We mandate that all mowers, whether they are operated by the City, or by contractors working for the City, use all safety features equipped on mowers. This includes chute covers on mowers."

If someone reports a mower not in compliance, Mitchell says the situation will be corrected.

A good way to reach City of Winston-Salem authorities regarding mower safety concerns or any other nonemergency issue is through City Link. City Link is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 727-8000 or e-mail citylink@cityofws.org. You also can access live chat through the city's home page at www.cityofws.org.
