Q. A sign warning of poor water quality in the creek in my neighborhood was posted for a while and has now been removed. My neighbors said it had to do with a leaking underground tank. My kids sometimes play in the creek. Does the state or county provide water quality testing; or if not, where can I get an evaluation of its safety? -- M.M.
A. City government's Stormwater Division's responsibilities include restoring, protecting and preserving surface waters within Winston-Salem's city limits. If the city has removed the sign, the creek has been given a clean bill of health.
Keith Huff, the director of the Stormwater Division, said that major creeks and streams are tested randomly and at fixed intervals. In addition, if a city resident reports seeing or smelling something unusual, the division will investigate and follow up with needed testing or other action. To report problems, call 727-8000.
To report pollution entering streams or storm drains outside the city limits, call Forsyth County's Environmental Affairs Department at 703-2440. The N.C. Division of Water Quality's Web site lists this number for reporting environmental emergencies: 1-800-858-0368. Also, in the case of emergency spills that pose an imminent health or safety concern, calling 911 will alert the proper authorities.
