A Winston-Salem man was killed Saturday morning when he was hit by a car after walking onto Interstate 40 in southeastern Winston-Salem, officials with the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
Terry Lee Simpson, 29, of 328 Oakdale St. was struck by a Toyota Corolla east of the Old Lexington Road overpass and died at the scene, patrol officials said.
The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
Troopers are continuing to investigate, officials said.
Truck pulling camper hits parked state patrol car
A pickup pulling a camper-trailer sideswiped an N.C. Highway Patrol car parked on the shoulder of southbound U.S. 52 yesterday near King, causing traffic to back up for more than a mile, observers said.
The sideswipe collision occurred about 3 p.m. just north of Exit 123 serving King and Tobaccoville.
No one was hurt in the collision, Sgt. Mike Brooks of the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
The incident occurred after a trooper stopped two vehicles, a white van and a pickup, on the shoulder of the highway for traffic violations and a 2003 GMC pickup pulling a camper trailer ran off the road, Brooks said.
The right front of the camper trailer hit the side of the white van and the trooper's car while the officer was sitting in the driver's seat.
The collision peeled the camper's siding back, leaving debris littering the roadway.
Charges were pending, Brooks said, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the wreck.
He declined to release the names of either the trooper or driver involved.
It took authorities about 3 hours to clear and completely reopen the roadway, observers said.
Secretary of state closes unlicensed business
RALEIGH -- State officials issued a cease and desist order for the owners of a North Carolina investment business after a raid netted nearly $2 million in bullion and coins.
The Secretary of State's office said its law-enforcement agents searched the office and storage areas connected to Sidney and Charlotte Hanson and their financial company, Queen Shoals Group LLC, in Charlotte.
Agents removed paper and electronic records as well as what was described as approximately $1.9 million in silver and gold bullion and coins.
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall said it appears that the company and its owners offered securities to the public without either the seller or the investment offerings being legally registered.
A phone call made to a listing for Sidney Hanson was not returned yesterday.
State trooper's widow starts fund to honor child
MAGGIE VALLEY -- The widow of an N.C. Highway Patrol trooper who was killed during a traffic stop last year has started a foundation in memory of the couple's infant son, who died four months after his father.
Michaela Blanton celebrated Tye's birthday yesterday with a fundraiser at the Maggie Valley Country Club. The boy was born seven weeks prematurely and suffered heart and neurological problems. He died last October.
His father, Trooper David Shawn Blanton Jr., 24, was shot to death last June during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near Canton.
The Tye Blanton Foundation will help babies and parents at the neonatal intensive-care unit at an Asheville hospital.
