IN SCOUTING

□ The following members of Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1242 recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the 2nd highest award that can be earned in Cadette Girl Scouting: Katherine Leak, Madeline Hamrick, Hannah Craver, Hannah Faye Sanders, Megan Kupsky, Claire Lineberger, Lauren Kent, Becky Spiegelman, Erin Strauss, Sydney Guthrie, Elizabeth Robins, Cora Moss, MacGregor Ruffin, Gabriella Andrade and Ellen Oliver.

For their leadership hours, the scouts organized an overnight for fellow Daisy, Brownie and Junior Scouts at the Fulton Family YMCA where over 95 scouts and leaders attended.

For their Silver Award project, the scouts made and donated over 140 travel-size fleece pillows that were given to pediatric patients in hospital. They also led a Junior Girl Scout troop in the pillow-making activity as well as family and friends. The scouts also worked with the Amani Foundation, providing administrative assistance and putting together bead kits for upcoming events.

□ Andrew Scott Willis, a member of Boy Scout Troop 911, recently received his Eagle Scout Award in a Court of Honor Ceremony at Burkhead United Methodist Church.

For his project, Andrew led the construction of a playground for exceptional students at Jefferson Elementary School. He designed, created and installed tactile stations for the children. He also repainted and repaired an existing playhouse. The final component of the project was to landscape the playground area.

Andrew is a senior at Mount Tabor High School and will attend UNC Chapel Hill in the fall. He is the son of Kevin and Nancy Willis.

□ The following Cub Scouts in Pack 942 at Calvary Baptist Church were awarded their religious medal for completing the God and Me program in May: Josh Bozeman, Patrick Lusk, Ross Hickman, Benjamin Gordon, Joshua Budd, Benjamin Doan, Thomas Doan, Paul Stancil, Clifton Harris, Ralph Shepherd, Benjamin Owens and Brandon Estes.

IN EDUCATION

□ Northern Hospital of Surry County recently awarded scholarships valued at $9,500 to area high-school seniors. The annual merit-scholarship program recognizes outstanding students that will be furthering their education at public colleges and universities.

The awards and their recipients are:

The NHSC General Scholarship worth $500 was awarded to Christopher Bowman of Mount Airy. He attends North Surry High School and plans to attend Surry Community College.

Two NHSC scholarships for a child of a hospital employee valued at $500 and renewable for three additional years were awarded to Ethan Marvin of Dobson and Jenna Brooke Enfield of Mount Airy. Ethan is the son of Johnny and Angela Collins and David Marvin, and attends Surry Central High School. He plans to continue his education at Western Carolina University majoring in music. Jenna is the daughter of Robert and Janice Enfield and attends North Surry High School. She plans to continue her education at Radford University majoring in nursing.

The NHSC Nancy Moncus Memorial Scholarship, valued at $500 and renewable for three additional years, was awarded to Megan Willis of Ararat, Va. She is the daughter of Kevin and Shelby Willis and attends Patrick County High School. Megan plans to continue her education at Virginia Tech majoring in education.

The NHSC Martha Wilkins Memorial Scholarship, valued at $500 and renewable for three additional years, was awarded to Lauren Glass of Mount Airy. She is the daughter of Laymon and Elizabeth Glass and attends Mount Airy High School. Lauren plans to continue her education at UNC Wilmington majoring in environmental science.

The NHSC Gentry Nursing Scholarship, valued at $500 and will continue for two years, was awarded to Britney Ortiz of Ararat, N.C. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Efrain Ortiz and attends Surry Central High School. She plans to continue her education at Surry Community College and major in nursing.

□ Meredith Poole was recently inducted in Pi Kappa Lambda at Appalachian State University, where she is a rising senior. Poole is the daughter of Gary and Diane Poole of Winston-Salem.

□ James Shelton, a recent graduate of North Stokes High School, has been awarded the 2009 North Carolina Retired School Personnel District Five Scholarship. The scholarship is a $1000 award given annually, and rotates among Stokes, Forsyth and Davidson counties which comprise the district.

Shelton graduated with honors from North Stokes in June, and will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the fall, where he plans to major in history with a minor in mathematics. He is the son of Jamie and Norma Shelton of Westfield.

□ Megan Marshall has been awarded the 2009 Stokes County Retired School Personnel Scholarship. The award is for $1000, and is awarded annually to a Stokes County senior who plans to seek a degree in some field of education.

Marshall is a recent graduate of South Stokes High School, where she graduated with honors. She plans to attend Appalachian State University in fall and major in elementary education. In addition to the NCRSP Scholarship, Marshall has been awarded the Preznell Robinson Scholarship and the Suzie Johnson Lauten Scholarship which is awarded by the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is the daughter of Eric and Nancy Marshall of Walnut Cove.

□ Joel Matthew Lawson has graduated with the degree of Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, in Sacramento, Calif.

He is a 2005 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, and the son of Billy and Kay Lawson of Kernersville.

IN THE ARTS

□ The following area students have been awarded William R. Kenan, Jr., Fellowships for 2009 at the Penland School of Crafts:

Hannah Barefoot of Winston-Salem, will be studying The Cutting Edge, print/letterpress with Beatrice Coron.

Cynthia Cukiernik of Pfafftown, will be studying The Visual Narrative, photography with Fritz Hoffman.

Jonie Ray of West Jefferson, will be studying Fantastic Flamework Fantasies, glass-flamework with Brian Kerkvliet, and Musings, Matter & Cross-Pollination, metals with Leslie Noell.

The Kenan Fellows Program enables promising young artists from UNC School of the Arts to study with Penland's faculty of artist educators who encourage experimentation across media and personal development.

□ Alisha Hamilton of Clemmons, has been named to the chancellor's list for the 2009 Spring semester at UNC Charlotte. She is majoring in political science with a minor in American studies and is expected to graduate in 2010. Hamilton was also inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society at UNC-Charlotte this past semester.

IN RELIGION

□ New Life Tabernacle's Junior Bible Quiz Team traveled to Raleigh, recently. to compete in the N.C. Jr. Bible Quiz State Finals. The team took first place and was undefeated in the double elimination event, which qualifies them to compete at the national level in Branson, Mo. later this year.

Four teams represented the church, each consisting of three to four quizzers ages five-12, and each spent six months in preparing for the event. The team members were: Katie Gray, Michael Ford, Natalie Timmons, Alita Ingle, Joshua Ford, Gracie Gray, Logan Timmons, Ryan Timmons, Claudia Gray, Ra'Leah Pritchett, Faith Hornsby, Grace Ford, Devan Ingle, and Ronnie Ingle II.

IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

□ Jessica Briana Fisher
recently participated in the Governor's Page Program in Raleigh, in which she spent a week providing administrative support as a page for the N.C. Department of Commerce. While there she attended press conferences, met the governor and assisted in day-to-day office operations.

Jessica is the daughter of Robert and Tanya Fisher, and she is a senior at Mount Tabor High School.

IN THE MILITARY

□ Army National Guard Pvt. Patricia R. Smith has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Tanya McBride of Kernersville, and a 2008 graduate of East Forsyth High School.

□ Army Spec. Gregory F. Schlager has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He graduated in 2003 from Robert B. Glenn High School, and received a bachelor's degree in 2007 from Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte. Schlager is the son of Liz Sapp of Kernersville.

IN 4-H

□ Kayla Jarrett was named the state senior division winner during the recent 4-H State Electric Congress in Charlotte, at which the state's three electric power companies annually recognize top 4-H'ers for electric energy project achievements. She is the daughter of Paul and Nita Jarrett of Lexington.

IN OTHER AREAS

□ The Columbiette Auxiliary, an organization of Catholic women dedicated to helping all peoples, recently presented a check for $1000 to Sally's Angels, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds and sharing resources to support families with critically and chronically ill children in need.

□ Dean Naujoks, the Yadkin Riverkeeper, has been awarded the River Network's 2009 National River Heroes Award. The award, created by the National River Network, recognizes individuals and groups who work to protect watersheds.

As part of Yadkin Riverkeeper Inc., Naujokus works to protect and improve the Yadkin Pee Dee River Basin through education, advocacy and action. His efforts to reduce pollution in Badin Lake, a major reservoir on the Yadkin River, have attracted much attention as the Yadkin Riverkeeper takes on Alcoa, one of the world's leading producers of aluminum. The Riverkeeper has built a strong coalition of local parties opposed to Alcoa's relicensing efforts.
