Cause of kayaker's death examined

WILKESBORO – Authorities are trying to determine the cause of death of a man found floating near his kayak in W. Kerr Scott Reservoir Saturday afternoon, according to officer Chad Starbuck of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

Gary James Watson, 54, of North Wilkesboro, was pulled from the water by boaters. The 911 call was placed at 3:46 p.m. Saturday.

Starbuck said that Watson had left his kayak for a swim. Watson was known to do that. His belongings, including medication for diabetes, were found dry and inside the kayak, which did not appear damaged, Starbuck said.

Officials are awaiting autopsy results before announcing a cause of death.
