Wake Forest has reached into the state of Georgia to pick up a 'big' football recruit.
Brandon Terry, a 6-5, 210-pound wide receiver, has committed to play for the Deacons. Terry, a rising senior from Alpharetta, Ga., was at a one-day Wake Forest camp on Sunday and impressed the WFU coaching staff enough to where he was offered a scholarship.
"They liked what they saw," said Jason Dukes, the head coach at Alpharetta High School. "He had about 13 schools that were seriously looking at him, but from what he and his parents said they loved the campus and everything about Wake Forest."
Dukes, a former offensive lineman at Georgia Tech in the mid-1990s, says that Terry should be a good fit for the Deacons and Coach Jim Grobe.
"I remember a couple of years ago I went to Jacksonville to watch the ACC Championship game against Georgia Tech and we couldn't score any points on them," Dukes said.
Dukes said that Terry, who finished fourth in the state in the 400 meters in the spring, ran a 4.49 at the Wake Forest camp.
Terry was also considering Wisconsin, Iowa, Tulane and Purdue, according to Dukes. Terry had also had been to Tennessee and Florida's football camps.
"There was also interest from North Carolina," Dukes said.
Terry spent most of his junior season in the shadow of another talented receiver, Michael Bennett, who has committed to Georgia. Both will be seniors this fall.
"In all honesty we didn't get the ball to Brandon enough," said Dukes, who was the offensive line coach at Alpharetta the last four seasons but will be in his first year as head coach.
Dukes said that Terry has a 3.6 grade point average, and is also interested in running track for the Deacons.
"He hopes to do some track there as well, but he knows football is his priority," Dukes said.
