Highway Patrol veteran fired after charge filed

The N.C. Highway Patrol has fired a local trooper who was arrested on a charge of driving while impaired after he sideswiped an SUV in Clemmons while he was off duty Thursday, patrol officials said in a news release.
Sgt. Crawford David Jones, 48, of 186 Hickory Tree Road, Mocksville, was traveling north on Lewisville-Clemmons Road at 9:21 p.m. when he hit the SUV.
Troopers investigating the incident registered his blood-alcohol content at 0.22 percent, patrol officials said. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.
Jones joined the Highway Patrol in December 1985.
The incident is still under investigation, Highway Patrol officials said.
