Highs
• More than a million people make the trek to Washington to watch President-elect Obama take the oath of office.
• Obama's inauguration comes a day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On the holiday, Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden participate in "activities dedicated to serving others in communities across the Washington, D.C. area."
Lows
• The record crowds create a host of challenges for organizers. Visitors tax the Washington-area public transportation system and highway network. The crowds also tax the city's cell-phone networks, causing some outages.
• Both Chief Justice John Roberts and President Obama stumbled slightly over wording of the presidential oath of office. Both were able to get back on track, though the oath was administered five minutes late.
