The robbery occurred shortly before 11 a.m.

Wilkes County now owns pit bulls seized in raid

WILKESBORO -- Wilkes County now owns 127 pit bulls seized in a Dec. 10 raid at Wildside Kennels, after the dogs' owner failed to meet yesterday's deadline to pay for the housing and care of the dogs as he awaits trial on a felony dogfighting charge, county officials said.

Last week, a judge ordered Ed Faron to pay nearly $53,000 for the care of the dogs. The dogs are being held at undisclosed locations because authorities say they are valuable evidence in a criminal case.

There are actually more than 127 dogs now, because several litters of puppies have been born since the dogs were seized.

Faron has a trial date of March 4. The raid capped an investigation by The Humane Society of the United States, Wilkes County Animal Control and the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office.

County officials said they would continue to hold the dogs pending the trial or a court order.

LEXINGTON -- A man robbed a Wachovia bank in Lexington yesterday, the Lexington Police Department said.

The robbery happened at 9:40 a.m. when the man, carrying a gun, entered the bank on South State Street and demanded money. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash. The man matches the description of a man who robbed the NewBridge bank in Lexington on Jan. 7, authorities said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lexington Area Crime Stoppers at 243-2400 or police department at 243-3304.

Hot-cocoa mix was used to start fire at soccer park

A Winston-Salem man was arrested last weekend by Davie County sheriff's deputies who accused him of using cocoa mix to set a fire last Friday night at the BB&T Soccer Park in Davie County.

The man, Shane Christian Alan Peebles, 20 of 2485 Spring Grove Drive, Apt. 103, in Winston-Salem, was charged with felony breaking and entering and burning of a building, according to Lt. Lee Whitesides of the Davie County Sheriff's Office.

Whitesides said that a man had been riding around the soccer field on his moped and thought that he had been locked in. The man then threw rocks and broke two windows before going in the soccer-complex building through an open door, Whitesides said.

The man knocked over a television stand, breaking a flat-screen television. He piled cardboard and packets of Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa Mix to set the fire, Whitesides said.

The break-in probably occurred between 8 and 9, and workers discovered the damage the next day.

The fire was limited to the kitchen, Whitesides said. The walls and floors were scorched, and there was smoke damage.
