A school bus driver accused of hitting several vehicles without stopping earlier this week was taking a generic version of the sleep drug Ambien, the Forsyth County Association of Educators told the Winston-Salem Journal today.

Holly Weavil, 54, of 345 Canary Trail, was charged with four counts of hit and run Monday after her bus hit two parked cars, a mailbox, and an unoccupied tractor-trailer near Dallas Street. The two children on the bus were not hurt.

"Holly has served this school district impeccably for nearly two decades, transporting children safely to school," Tripp Jeffers, the association's president, said in a statement. "While she accepts responsibility for the incident, she was herself a victim of the dangerous side-effects of prescription medication. She is in tears about this whole situation and is thankful that no one was hurt."

Weavil is suspended without pay pending an investigation by the school system, said Theo Helms, a spokesman for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

She said through the educators' association that she is scared to drive a bus but would like to work for the school system in a different capacity.
