The 2006 Blackstone Merlot (California, $12) is a nice value wine that's widely available. A smoky nose gives away to smooth plum flavors with tobacco accents, and finishes with slightly earthy flavors. It's nicely balanced and food-friendly, with plenty of interesting flavors thanks to the addition of small amounts of syrah, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, malbec and petite sirah. Serve with burgers. (Available in many supermarkets and Total Wine & More).
