CHARLOTTE -- The North Carolina Archives had made more than 23,000 digital images from 18th and 19th century newspapers available online.

History buffs and genealogists can browse newspapers from Wilmington, Fayetteville, New Bern, Salisbury and other places from around 1750 to the 1890s.

The online database lets people search by publication, year or keyword.

Experts say scanning newspapers into a digital format helps assure they will survive as primary source for generations to come.

The Newspaper Digitization Project's database can be found at http://www.archives.ncdcr.gov/Newspaper/index.html
