RALEIGH — North Carolina's top prosecutor is investigating state purchases from a politically connected surveillance gear maker.
Attorney General Roy Cooper has opened a probe into purchases from Law Enforcement Associates.
Democratic state Sen. Tony Rand of Cumberland is chairman of the board for the Raleigh surveillance device maker. Former executives have said Rand and other politicians were involved with a scheme to manipulate the company's stock.
Gov. Beverly Perdue has asked at least four state agencies to examine nearly $200,000 in buys of surveillance equipment from LEA since Rand joined the board of directors in 2003. Rand has said he is leaving the Senate this month to become Perdue's parole chief.
