A botched robbery attempt led to the fatal shooting Wednesday night of a man selling snacks at an apartment complex off Cole Road, the owner of the grocery store that employed the man said yesterday.
Winston-Salem police found the body of Cirilo Laredo Avila about 9 in the back of his snack truck in the 2700 block of Pepper Court in the southeastern part of the city.
Another man, who also was shot, was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he was in serious condition yesterday. Police have not released his name, and no charges have been filed.
Avila, 35, sold snacks from a truck for El Jarocho, a grocery store on Waughtown Street, said Capt. David Clayton of the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Miguel Rivadeneyra, the store's owner, said through a translator that Avila was killed during a robbery attempt. Avila and the man who was wounded shot at each other, he said.
Clayton would not confirm Rivadeneyra's account, but said that robbery was a possible motive.
The second man has given a statement to police, Clayton said.
Avila, who had worked for El Jarocho for three weeks, was a hard worker and never caused any trouble, Rivadeneyra said.
Avila had a wife and a 2-year-old son, he said.
His death is the 16th homicide in the city this year. There were 20 at this time last year.

El Jarocho is helping make funeral arrangements for Avila. Anyone who wants more information can call 784-8025.
