CHAPEL HILL

The chief executive officer of North Carolina's largest health insurer is retiring Feb. 1.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina said Friday that CEO Bob Greczyn is stepping down after 10 years as president, CEO or both. The company had already announced Greczyn's departure in October and named Brad Wilson his successor, but a date for the change hadn't been made final.

Blue Cross membership nearly doubled during Greczyn's tenure to 3.7 million members, or almost 40 percent of the state's population. The not-for-profit private corporation said annual revenues tripled and its employed 4,900 workers while Greczyn was at the helm.
