Officials from Winston-Salem State University and Forsyth Technical Community College announced a new program yesterday that will allow students to simultaneously enroll at both institutions.
The Dual Admissions Program is designed for students who want a bachelor's degree but aren't academically prepared for a four-year college, said Gary Greene, the president of Forsyth Tech. He and Chancellor Donald Reaves of Winston-Salem State announced the partnership at a news conference.
"That's the forte of community colleges," Greene said. "We take great pride in meeting the needs of these students, who come to us with all their strengths and weaknesses. This is a road map to a bachelor's degree, regardless of their academic preparation when they started."
Reaves said he sees the program as a way to improve the school's retention and graduation rate, which has been one of this biggest goals since becoming chancellor in 2007.
The program will begin next fall and will initially be open to 25 students. The partnership is the first of this kind in the state, officials said.
