Winston-Salem police were trying last night to identify a man who died after being shot Monday night at a house on Country Club Road.
Police were able to talk with the man at Forsyth Medical Center, said Capt. David Clayton, but he did not tell them much. The man was taken for surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he died later that night.
No one has been charged in connection with shooting, which police are investigating as a homicide.
The man was shot in the lower abdomen, Clayton said. An autopsy was scheduled for yesterday, but the results were not available last night.
Police compared the victim's fingerprints with other fingerprints in a database, but they didn't get a match, Clayton said.
"We are still trying to identify the victim," he said.
Police got a call about the shooting after the man had been taken to Forsyth. A woman who was with the victim told investigators that the shooting happened at 4728 Country Club Road, which is west of the intersection with Jonestown Road.
"We still don't know exactly what happened," Clayton said.
It is not clear if the victim lived in the house.
The brick house is along a strip of 1950s-era houses, many of which have been converted into businesses. It appears to be a rental house, Clayton said.
Forsyth County tax records indicate that James D. Reavis has owned the house since 2005. Reavis could not be reached for comment. Investigators plan to speak with Reavis to learn about the residents, Clayton said.
Candy Chrismon, who works at Eubanks Properties next door to the house, said that everything was calm when she left the business just after 5 p.m. Monday. She arrived for work yesterday to find police tape surrounding the house.
"I was floored," Chrismon said. "There's never any trouble there."
She said that there had been problems at the house about 10 years ago, but that there had been some turnover in the residents living there, and she hadn't seen any problems there since.
Clayton said that investigators are still looking at whether police had been called to the house over the years.
He said that investigators were able to talk to a someone who lives in the house. That person was cooperative, but did not see the shooting and wasn't able to provide much information, Clayton said.
Police canvassed the neighborhood after the shooting, Clayton said, and no neighbors reported hearing gunfire, which may indicate that the shooting took place inside.
"We are hopeful that we will learn more information and find people who can identify the victim and tell us what happened during the incident," Clayton said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 727-2800, or the Spanish-language line at 728-3904.
