WSSU still without AD

Winston-Salem State is back to the drawing board in its search for an athletics director.

Michael Bailey and Tim Grant, two of the three candidates who interviewed for the vacancy, are no longer being considered, according to sources.

Chancellor Donald Reaves released a statement yesterday saying he still hopes to have an AD in place by Oct. 1.

Reaves would not reveal the two candidates who did interview, saying only that they have removed their names from the process.

A third candidate, who was recommended by the search committee, did not get the chance to interview, according to the release by the university yesterday.

Grant, a former basketball player and assistant coach at WSSU, is the director of Winston-Salem's Recreation & Parks Department.

"I was interviewed and I was one of those candidates," Grant said yesterday. "Through the process I have to say that Dr. Reaves was very gracious, very informative and patient with me."

Grant wouldn't say if he was offered the job.

"What it came down to is I made a decision that was in the best interest of me and my family," Grant said. "Looking at the work that needs to be done over there and with my own family situation with my wife and our two children it just wasn't a good fit for me."

A source said that Bailey, the football coach at athletics director at Virginia Union, is focused on this football season and took his name out of the running about three weeks ago.

"We certainly want the best candidate for the position and it also must be someone who truly wants to lead our athletic program," Reaves said in the statement. "Therefore, we will continue the process until we find the right person with the right fit for Winston-Salem State. We are fortunate to have an excellent interim athletic director in Tonia Walker, and that means we will continue to move forward with the athletic program."
