IN SCOUTING

□ Junior Girl Scout Troop 174 has completed the Bronze Award, the highest award that can be achieved at the Junior Girl Scout level. For their project the girls organized a blessing of animals and a pet festival to raise supplies for the Forsyth County Humane Society. The Girl Scouts invited the Humane Society and AARF to distribute information about their organizations, and the Winston-Salem Dog Training Club gave demonstrations on obedience and agility training. The girls collected donations, made two raffle baskets for the humane society, had a face painting booth, and created advertising fliers.

Troop members are Katherine Bell, Monica Hassett, Anna Holbrook, Vickie Li, and Jennifer Mericle. The troop leader is Tricia Bell.

IN EDUCATION

□ Byron Charles Branch has received his Doctor of Medicine from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He also holds a B.S. degree in sports medicine from Pepperdine University in California, and an M.S. degree in exercise physiology from Texas A&M University. After graduation, he will live in San Antonio, Texas, where he will begin his residency training in neurosurgery.

Branch is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles L. Branch Jr. of Winston-Salem.

□ Edidiong Celestine Ntuen has received her Doctor of Medicine from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She also holds a B.S. degree in biology from the UNC Chapel Hill, and an M.S. in biomedical science from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. After graduation, she will begin a residency in dermatology at the University of Chicago.

Ntuen is the daughter of Celestine and Tina Ntuen of Greensboro.

□ Zachary Hines has graduated from Wake Forest University, cum laude, with a B.A. in English and in anthropology. He is the son of Michael and Leigh Hines of Winston-Salem, and a 2005 graduate of Mount Tabor High School.

□ Christopher Tegeler of Winston-Salem has graduated, cum laude, from Wake Forest University with a B.S. in health and exercise science.

□ Alexandra Louise Gray of Winston-Salem was named to the dean's list for the 2009 spring semester at Wake Forest University.

□ Ben Hueston, a rising seventh-grader at Hanes Magnet School, recently attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference Alumni in Boston. He examined the effect of leadership during the critical periods of colonization and revolution in American history.

Ben is the son of Harry and Diane Hueston of Winston-Salem.

□ Nikkia R. Young, a student at Salem Academy, is the recipient of the 2009 Robert G. Prongay Key Club Scholarship. This scholarship is given annually by the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club to a high-school senior who is a member of an eligible Key Club, a high-school service club sponsored by Kiwanis, and who has demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership and community service.

Nikkia has been a leader in organizing and caring out numerous Key Club programs and activities at Salem Academy. She served as club secretary, and distinguished herself at the Carolina's District of Key Club, where she was elected lieutenant governor of Division 16 in her junior year and governor in her senior year. She has also worked with young children through tutoring at Ibraham Elementary School, volunteering at the Winston-Salem Children's Museum, and through the planning of a community health fair.

Nikkia plans to attend Roanoke College in Salem, Va., in the fall, pursuing degrees in sociology and musical performance. She is the daughter of Robert Young Sr. and Nikki Young of Winston-Salem.

IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

□ Angela Vogler, a student at Mount Tabor High School, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives. She is the daughter of Ronald and Charlotte Vogler of Winston-Salem, and was sponsored by Rep. Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth.

□ Meredith Abernethy, a student at Mount Tabor High School, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives. She is the daughter of Richard and Anne Abernethy of Winston-Salem and was sponsored by Rep. Larry Brown, R-Forsyth.

□ Gabrielle Marshall, a student at North Davidson High School, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives. She is the daughter of Todd and Angel Gallimore of Winston-Salem, and was sponsored by Rep. Jerry Dockham, R-Davidson.

IN THE ARTS

□ At the June 2009 annual meeting of its membership, The Little Theatre of Winston Salem elected the board of directors and officers for its 2009-10 season.

Continuing as president will be Carrie Collins, with Susan Giamportone as vice president, David Patterson as secretary and David L. Olson as treasurer.

New directors elected to the board for their first term are Daniel Alvarez, Nancy Hawley, Patricia Toole, Martha Wheelock and Eva Wu.

Continuing directors are Ed Buckalew, Miriam Davie, Ed Hanes, Jr., Brian Joyce, Peter Juran, Christopher Leak, Chevara Orrin, Daniel Sciandra, Dudley Watts and Karl Yena.

Also, The Little Theatre will begin its new season in September, officially adopting its new name as Twin City Stage. Operations for the theatre will continue at the Arts Council Theater on Coliseum Drive, which has been home since 1957.

IN PUBLIC SERVICE

□ Kaila Wolcott, an eighth-grader at Wiley Middle School, was recently awarded the Excellence in Community Service Award by the Crosby Scholars Program. The award is given to the Middle School Crosby Scholar who has completed the highest number of community-service hours in the school year.

IN THE MILITARY

□ Navy Seaman Recruit Catlin M. Bowman recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Kathy J. Bowman of Mocksville, and Kelly Bowman of Mocksville, and a 2006 graduate of Davie High School.

□ Air Force Airman Bradley S. Parks has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and has earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Parks is the son of Vicki Parks of Winston Salem, and a 2003 graduate of Reynolds High School.

□ Airman 2nd Lt. Christopher Carrillo has graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., with a degree in systems engineering. He will be stationed at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., while he is in pilot training.

Carrillo is a 2005 graduate of Forbush High School and is the son of Chris and Midori Smitherman.

IN 4-H

□ Mary Ruth Sheets of Lexington has been inducted into the North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame at State 4-H Congress in Raleigh. The North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame honors people who have had a significant effect on the North Carolina 4-H program. From more than 240 nominations received, Sheets was one of the 100 individuals selected for the recognition.

Sheets became a 4-H club leader for Central 4-H Club in 1965 and remains a club leader today. She has served as the president of the County 4-H Advisory Council, the president of the Volunteer Leaders Association and currently serves as secretary of the County Extension Advisory Council. She has gone far beyond the call of duty for 4-H through her 44 years of service to the North Carolina 4-H program, the 4-H said.

IN SPORTS

□ Justin Hunsucker of Winston-Salem won the silver medal in the top division of men's singles tennis at the N.C. Special Olympics Midsummer games at N.C. State in Raleigh July. He and his father, Charles Hunsucker, also won the silver medal in the top division of unified doubles at the games.
