DOBSON -- Lightning from a thunderstorm in Surry County last night struck two firefighters and caused fires at three houses off Siloam Road near the Ararat community, authorities said.
The firefighters, who work for the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department, had minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital, authorities said.
The house fires were put out, but some residents were displaced, authorities said.
Duke Energy Corp. reported at 9 p.m. that 289 customers had lost power in Surry. The storm also knocked down some trees and flooded some roads in eastern Surry.
A person was trapped in a greenhouse with rising waters, but family members rescued the person, authorities said.
Girl, 6, dies after being hit by car passing school bus
RALEIGH -- A 6-year-old girl died this week after being struck by a sport utility vehicle.
Ashley Ramos Hernand died when she was hit Wednesday afternoon while crossing the street after getting off a bus that was leaving from an elementary school.
Geraldine Baron Deitz, 83, is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and passing a stopped school bus.
A police report indicated that Deitz told police the school bus had not activated all its warning signals. Witnesses, though, told police that the signals and markers were properly activated.
Kernersville man is charged with assault, attempted rape
KERNERSVILLE -- A Kernersville man was arrested Tuesday on charges of assault and attempted rape in connection with a stabbing last week, authorities said yesterday.
Elias Rodriguez, 45, of 1346 Claxton Ridge Road is charged with attempted first-degree rape and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, an arrest warrant says. Rodriguez is accused of assaulting a woman Aug. 13 with a knife and a broken piece of a door casing and trying to rape her, the warrant says. The offenses occurred at his home, said Will Mabel, a spokesman for the Kernersville Police Department.
Officers found Rodriguez and the woman lying on the bedroom floor when they went to his home on a complaint of loud music. Both had stab wounds.
Rodriguez and the woman were treated at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Rodriguez was being held yesterday in the Forsyth County Jail with his bond set at $500,000. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 4.
