IN OTHER AREAS
□ Arbor Acres Retirement Community and Salemtowne Retirement Community members recently held a celebration to recognize the winners of their walking competition. Salemtowne's team won, having walked a total of 107,751 minutes. Jim MacLachlan was the top male walker, and Doris Helvey top female walker.
□ Ernest V. Logemann of Winston-Salem is the new board chairman of the East Carolina Alumni Association. He graduated from East Carolina in 1968 with a degree in history from the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, and currently serves as CPA and partner of Gray Callison & Company, PA. He has been a CPA for 26 years and also taught in Winston-Salem for 14 years.
Logemann has been an elected member of the Alumni Association's board of directors since 2004, having served as treasurer for three terms, and most recently as vice chairman.
□ Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful Inc. has recognized 38 schools for their beautification and environmental education efforts during the past year. Clean & Green flags and certificates went to four schools.
Elementary-school winners were Cook, Ibraham and Old Town. The middle-school winner was Lowrance.
There were also 34 top-scoring Campus Excellence role model school winners this year. Each school received the Clean & Green flag as well as a plaque and a tree.
Elementary school winners are Ashley, Bolton, Brunson, Cash, Children's Center, Clemmons, Griffith, Hall-Woodward, Jefferson, Kernersville, Konnoak, Latham, Lewisville, Meadowlark, Middle Fork, North Hills, Old Richmond, Rural Hall, Sedge Garden, Southwest, Speas, Union Cross, Vienna, Marvin Ward and Whitaker. Middle-school winners are Jefferson, Northwest, Southeast and Wiley. High-school winners are East Forsyth, Glenn, Reagan, Reynolds, and UNC School of the Arts High School.
IN EDUCATION
□ Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem has announced its scholarship winners. The scholarships are given annually to members of Mount Carmel to help them further their education after high school.
The scholarships and their recipients are:
Jessie Connor, Ryan Shore, Kristin Ayers and Justin Stiller received the J.T. and Maud George Scholarship.
Jessie is a rising sophomore at Western Carolina University. She is the daughter of Rodney and Katy Conner.
Ryan is a rising sophomore at Western Carolina University. He is the son of Charlie and Kim Shore.
Kristin is a rising sophomore at N.C. State University. She is the daughter of Ron and Sue Ayers.
Justin is a rising senior at N.C. State University. He is the son of the late Gary and Cheryl Stiller.
Elizabeth Collins received the Raymond and Edith Hill Scholarship. She is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and will be entering the graduate program at Appalachian State University. She is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Joe Collins.
Jeffrey Brown received the Bruce Elledge Scholarship. He will attend the Savannah College of Art and Design in the fall. He is the son of Jeff and Elaine Brown.
□ Joshua Jennings Tucker of Winston-Salem has been named to the 2009 winter and spring semesters dean's list with a 4.0 GPA at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
□ Sherry Allen Johnson has graduated from Boise State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education with an emphasis in earth science and geography. While at BSU, she was a dean's list honoree. She is a member of the National Science Teachers Organization and has worked with the Idaho National Geographic Geography Bee for two years.
Johnson has been a resident of Boise, Idaho, since 1988. She is a 1980 graduate of Parkland High School, and is the daughter of Tom and Connie Allen of Winston Salem.
□ Allison Douglas Lyerly has graduated as a valedictorian from N.C. State University with a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences and a minor in psychology. She completed the University Scholars Program, was president of the Biology Club, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She was also awarded a North Carolina Optometry Scholarship to attend Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn.
Allison is a 2005 honor graduate of West Forsyth High School and is the daughter of Jack and Martha Lyerly of Clemmons. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Charles R. Douglas of Salisbury and the late Mr. Charles R. Douglas and the late Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Lyerly of Spencer.
□ Chinedu Iwuora of Winston-Salem was named to the president's list for the 2009 spring semester at Chowan University. She is a junior majoring in business administration.
□ Jeffrey Scott Turner has graduated magna cum laude from James Madison University. He was also presented with an award for Academic Excellence, having made the dean's list every semester and president's list twice. His other awards include the Best Senior Thesis and the Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Honors Award.
Turner majored in integrated science and technology with a concentration in Environmental Science and environmental management. He has joined the Peace Corps and will serve 27 months in Ghana as the facilitator for agro-forestry and sustainable resources.
Turner is a 2005 graduate of Mount Tabor High school. He is the son of Michael and Candi Turner of Pfafftown.
□ Nora Brickhouse of Winston-Salem has been awarded a nine-month academic year Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study in Mexico. She will be studying anthropology in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City. She will represent the Reynolda Rotary Club, which sponsored her application, and will engage in Rotary projects with her host Rotary club in Mexico City.
Brickhouse is a 2005 graduate of Reynolds High School and a 2008 graduate of Wake Forest University with a double major in anthropology and Spanish. She is the daughter of Blaine and Jeanne Brickhouse.
□ Elizabeth Hubbard of Winston-Salem has received academic honors at Lynn University by making the dean's list in the 2009 spring semester. She is a senior majoring in business administration.
□ Crystal Shantrice Isler is a recipient of the N.C. Teaching Fellows Scholarship, worth $26,000. She has also received a $1,000 scholarship from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and an $8,000 scholarship from the Edgar and Lois Reich Scholarship Fund.
Crystal will participate in the Teaching Fellows program at UNC Charlotte in the fall.
She is a 2009 graduate of West Forsyth High School, and is the daughter of Michael and Cindy Isler and the sister of Derrick Isler of Winston-Salem.
□ Henry McVeigh Noel II of Winston-Salem has earned a Master's of Arts in management from the Wake Forest University Babcock Graduate School of Management.

□ Ashley Winfree has graduated summa cum laude from the College of Engineering at N.C. State University with a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in art studies. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma and Golden Key honor societies. As an undergraduate, she conducted bone-implant research, and her senior project team designed and built a prototype breathing device for children at WakeMed Hospital. At graduation, she received the Biomedical Engineering Department's Leadership Award for 2009.
In addition to her academic work, she served in the University Senate as vice-chairman of the Academics Committee, as well as being active with Engineering World Health and the local animal shelter. She has accepted a position with Cook Medical in Winston-Salem as an associate engineer in research and development.
□ Stephanie L. Perkins was named to the chancellor's list at Appalachian State University for the 2009 spring semester. She is a rising senior, majoring in elementary education.
She is a 2006 graduate of North Forsyth High School, and is the daughter of Jeff and Debbie Perkins of Pfafftown and the granddaughter of Martha Newsome of Winston-Salem.
□ Anne Lynne Selby has graduated from Thiel College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication sciences and disorders. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Selby of Winston-Salem.
□ Brendan J. Michel of Mount Airy has been named to the dean's list for the 2009 spring semester at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
□ Sara Argenta, a rising junior at Forsyth Country Day School, recently attended the 10-day summer National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Boston. Along with other high school students from around the country and from seven foreign countries, she was introduced to concepts in public health, medical ethics, medical research and clinical practice. She was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of her academic success and commitment to the field of medicine.
Sara is a summer Volunteen at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and is a member of the WFUBMC Youth Advisory Council. In addition to her work and interest in medicine, Sara is a lifeguard at New Sherwood pool, a member of the FCDS varsity swim team and varsity track and field team, and long-time volunteer with Special Olympics swimming.
She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Louis C. Argenta of Winston-Salem.
□ William R. Carlton Jr. has received a bachelor's degree in biology and with a minor in English at Virginia Military Institute. His graduating honors included Distinguished Graduate.

Sara Katherine Klinepeter has a bachelor's degree in religious study from the University of Virginia and will begin an internship in pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. She is the daughter of Kurt and MaryEllen Klinepeter of Winston-Salem.
Naiping Michael Xu has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill, and will begin his residency in orthopaedic surgery. He is the son of Charlie Xu and Zao Ni of Greensboro and is the husband of Ashley Xu.

□ The Stratford Rotary Club of Winston-Salem recently awarded $2,500 college scholarships to three 2009 local high-school graduates. The recipients were:
Lyndsey Grubbs, who graduated from West Forsyth High School and will attend New York University this fall. She graduated fifth in her class, was a member of the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society, and received several awards for dance performance.
Anna Spangler, who graduated from Mount Tabor High School and will attend UNC Chapel Hill this fall. She graduated in the top 8 percent of her class, was a member of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society, served on Student Council in ninth and 11th grades, and was a Crosby Scholar.
Hannah Hammaker, who graduated from Reagan High School and will attend Appalachian State University. She graduated in the top 5 percent of her class and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was editor of the school newspaper, served as the K-12 correspondent for the Winston-Salem Journal, and was on the varsity track team for three years.
IN THE ARTS
□ The Southpark Branch of Piedmont Federal Savings bank recently had its annual Hometown Graffiti Art Contest, in which eight art students from Parkland High School participated.
Visitors to the Southpark office voted for their favorites and the three winners were: Correct Craft by Seth Mahaffey, Waiting by Juan Mariche and Hummmm by Marysabel Vasquez. They each won a $100 savings bond from Piedmont Federal.
Seth's art was also chosen best of show, and he won an additional $500 savings bond.
Piedmont Federal also presented Parkland's art department with a $250 donation.
□ Claire Cannon Christopher and F. Hudnall Christopher of Winston-Salem have been named by UNC School of the Arts as the recipients of the 2009 Giannini Society Award. The Giannini Award is one of the school's most prestigious honors and is given in recognition of meritorious service to the school.
Longtime members of the Giannini Society, the Christophers have served on the Giannini Advisory Committee since 1997, and as co-chairmen of the Giannini Society for four years. During their time as co-chairmen of the society, membership grew from 350 members to more than 500 members, a testament to their leadership, enthusiasm and commitment to the school's community of artists. The couple received honorary doctorates from UNCSA in 2006.
□ Habitat for Humanity presented awards to a group of local artists recently during its annual BirdFest party and auction. BirdFest consists of local professional and amateur artists who submit garden-themed works of art to be sold or auctioned, of which all proceeds go toward building a Habitat house for a local family.

□ Cara Read, a student at Mount Tabor High School, recently served as a page for the N.C. House of Representatives.
She is the daughter of Russel and Erin Read of Winston-Salem, and was sponsored by Speaker of the House Joe Hackney (D-Chatham, Orange and Moore).
IN THE MILITARY
□ Air Force Airman Brent A. Borkey graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and has earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He also earned distinction as an honor graduate.
Borkey is a 1999 graduate of Mount Tabor High School.
□ Richard A. Greenlee Jr. has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He is the Chief, Executive Services, for the Air National Guard. In this position, he is responsible for all protocol and conference planning support to the director of the Air National Guard in Arlington, Va., and the commander of the Air National Guard Readiness Center at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.
Greenlee is a 1987 graduate of Carver High School and a 1991 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, and the son of Richard and Yvonne Greenlee of Kernersville.
□ Navy Seaman Recruit Antonio T. Noble has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2005 graduate of South Stokes High School.
