Winston-Salem police have yet to identify a homicide victim who was found Tuesday at the entrance of a mobile-home park in the southern part of the city.

An autopsy yesterday showed that the man died from blunt-force trauma, police Capt. David Clayton said.

Officers responded to an emergency call just after 7 p.m. and found the dead man by Jones Road, off South Main Street.

Police said that the man is white and of Hispanic descent, did not have any identification on him and does not show up in any reports of missing people in the area.

Police described the man as about 35, weighing 154 pounds, and wearing a black T-shirt and dark blue shorts. He has a tattoo on the front of his right thigh of a heart with an arrow and the initials UB.

He was wearing a gold wedding band.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 727-2800 or the Spanish-speaking Crime Stoppers line at 728-3904.

The man's death is the fourth homicide in the city this year.

Salisbury man sentenced to prison in connection with robbery, death

LEXINGTON -- A Salisbury man was sentenced to prison yesterday after he pleaded guilty to felony accessory before an armed robbery in connection with the death of Lexington man last year.

Rodney A. Carpenter, 24, entered an Alford plea in Davidson Superior Court. An Alford plea allows a defendant to plea guilty in his best interests but not admit any wrongdoing.

Carpenter was initially charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in the death of Brandon Kenyon Ausborne.

Judge Tanya Wallace sentenced Carpenter to serve six to eight years in prison.

Ausborne, 26, was shot in the back, prosecutor Greg Brown said.

Demarious Crawford of East Spencer is accused of shooting Ausborne. Crawford is scheduled to appear in court in early May.

At Carpenter's hearing, Brown said that Carpenter directed Crawford and another man to rob Ausborne of drugs and money on Aug. 13, 2008.

After Ausborne was shot, an undisclosed amount of money was taken from him, Brown said.

Three other defendants, including Crawford, gave investigators conflicting statements about Carpenter's role, said Lori Hamilton-DeWitt, one of Carpenter's attorneys.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 727-2800.

Stokes County authorities say inmate found dead in jail committed suicide

DANBURY -- An inmate in the Stokes County Jail committed suicide Tuesday, authorities said yesterday.

James Trent Johnson, 45, of Walnut Cove had been in jail since April 13, said Capt. Al Tuttle of the Stokes County Sheriff's Department.

According to court records, Johnson was facing numerous drug charges, including trafficking in opium or heroin.

Officers found Johnson unconscious about 4:20 p.m. when they made their rounds. He was taken to Stokes Reynolds Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Johnson was not on a suicide watch, Tuttle said.

"He had some medical issues, and was being observed for that," Tuttle said, but he was not thought to be suicidal.

The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an investigation of Johnson's death, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies, Tuttle said.
