An inmate in the Stokes County jail committed suicide yesterday, authorities said this morning.
James Trent Johnson, 45, of Walnut Cove, had been in jail since April 13, said Stokes County Sheriff's Capt. Al Tuttle.
According to court records, Johnson was facing numerous drug charges, including trafficking in opium or heroin.
Officers found Johnson unconscious about 4:20 yesterday when they made their rounds. He was taken to Stokes Reynolds Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Johnson was not on a suicide watch, Tuttle said.
"He had some medical issues, and was being observed for that," Tuttle said, but he was not believed to be suicidal.
The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an investigation of Johnson's death, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies, Tuttle said.
