Fire & Police Briefs: Surry fire was deliberately set, investigator says

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A fire that destroyed a mobile home in Surry County Monday appears to have been intentionally set, a fire investigator said yesterday.

The fire occurred in the 100 block of West Crosswinds Court just east of Mount Airy. A resident came home just after 5 p.m. and discovered the fire, said Earl Mounce, an investigator in the Surry County Fire Marshal's Office.

Mounce said that some items were missing from the home, and the fire may have been set to cover up a burglary. No one was injured. The investigation is continuing, he said, and includes investigators from the Surry County Sheriff's Office.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Six charged with illegally dismissing criminal cases

RALEIGH -- A former assistant district attorney and five others are facing charges of illegally dismissing criminal cases, including impaired-driving cases.

A Johnston County grand jury on Monday indicted Cindy Jaeger, four local attorneys and a court clerk on charges including conspiracy and altering official case records.

Jaeger is a former assistant district attorney in Forsyth County, where she worked after leaving Johnston County in September 2007. She left District Attorney Tom Keith's office last year to work in Randolph County, where she was fired last week.

The State Bureau of Investigation presented evidence Monday morning. Last summer, agents seized dozens of DWI cases and other files to examine them for evidence of tampering.

The Attorney General's Office said in a statement that investigators believe that the cases were dismissed by using forms signed by Jaeger, then filed after she resigned from the Johnston County District Attorney's Office.

10 Bladen County students charged after campus fight

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Authorities say that 10 students at a high school have been charged after a fight at the school in which an officer was slightly injured trying to break up the fight. The fight broke out yesterday morning at West Bladen High School.

Maj. Phillip Little of the Bladen County Sheriff's Office said that the students were charged with inciting a riot and assault on a government officer.

More arrests are expected. Little said that investigators think that the fight started between two boys, and then their friends got involved.

Man arrested in assault on UNC Charlotte professor

CHARLOTTE -- Police say that a man has been arrested in the beating and robbery last year of a professor who was in a coma for months after the attack.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said that the arrest was made yesterday in the beating of Narayan Dhakal, who is a member of the faculty at the UNC Charlotte.

Dhakal, 42, is still recovering from his injuries. The math professor was leaving a bar in Charlotte about 1:40 a.m. Oct. 10 when he was brutally kicked and beaten.

Maurice James Weaver, 18, was arrested in Lexington and charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

He was being held yesterday in the Mecklenburg County Jail.

Jones County town imposes curfew for youth under 18

TRENTON -- A small town in Jones County has imposed a curfew for those under age 18.

The Trenton Town Board of Commissioners has voted to keep those under 18 off the streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Mayor Gladys Meadows said that people all over town had requested the action.

Sheriff John Hall of Jones County says that the ordinance is expected to keep children out of trouble.

Hall says that some minors are out on the street almost around the clock.

Violators will be taken home. If a parent or guardian can't be found, the youngster will be turned over to the Jones County Department of Social Services.

There are exceptions for work, school or church functions, as well as those just traveling through town.
