IN MEDICINE

□ Sixteen nurses at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center have been named to the Great 100 list in North Carolina, which recognizes some of those providing excellent health care.

Nurses at Wake Forest Baptist who were recognized are: Sarah Bullock, B.S.N., R.N. (pediatric behavioral health); Patricia Ford, B.S.N., R.N. (adult behavioral health); Christine Hastings, R.N. (Rapid Response Team); Sally Hauser, M.S.N. (Breast Care Center); Billy Haynes, B.S.N., R.N. (Life Support Education); Ann Heilig, R.N. (4B – ICU); Kim Hutchinson, Ed.D., R.N. The Great 100 Inc. is a grass-roots organization that allows nurses across the state to nominate their peers who demonstrate excellent nursing care and a commitment to their profession. Recipients are recognized for their outstanding professional ability and for the contributions they make to improve the health-care services in their community.

K. Bridget Brosnihan, Ph.D., a professor in the Hypertension and Vascular Research Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has received the Page-Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Heart Association's Council for High Blood Pressure Research.

The award is presented each year to an individual who has had a lifetime of outstanding achievements in the field of hypertension and has served as a role model through service, research and teaching during a career typically spanning at least 25 years. Brosnihan received the award during the council's 62nd annual meeting in Atlanta.

Brosnihan is a co-director of the Molecular Medicine Program, as well as a professor of physiology and pharmacology. She was a member of the team that established the Hypertension and Vascular Research Center. She serves on the editorial boards of Hypertension, the American Journal of Physiology/Heart and Current Hypertension Review. Brosnihan has mentored faculty, post-doctoral students, fellows, graduate students and undergraduates, and contributed to the development of international fellowship programs

IN EDUCATION

Wendy Bartlett of Winston-Salem and Katherine O'Brien of Austin, Texas, have been awarded the Marcellus E. Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award by Nathan O. Hatch, the president of Wake Forest University. Each woman will receive $20,000.

Bartlett graduated from Wake Forest in 1997 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. She has taught math at Parkland High School for 10 years. Waddill Committee members noted her outstanding use of technology in the classroom and the ways she integrates vocabulary into math lessons. Bartlett led the effort to develop an International Baccalaureate program at Parkland, and wrote a grant request for Federal Magnet School Assistance. As a result, Parkland received more than $1 million for staff development, technology upgrades and curriculum materials.

O'Brien graduated from Wake Forest in 2001 with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. She has been a teacher for seven years. Waddill Committee members were impressed with her method of integrating current events into daily lessons, and how well she connects with her students and their family situations.

Lori Carter of Winston-Salem has been awarded a scholarship from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina to assist in her theological studies at North Park Theological Seminary. Carter's home church is First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem. She plans to go into the ministry as a parish nurse after graduation.

Junaid Sulahry of Lewisville, a graduate of UNC Charlotte, has been offered a full scholarship at the University of Akron, where he will pursue his juris doctor degree. He is the son of Tariq and Saira Sulahry.

Gwenn Steward Clements has received the Outstanding Teacher of the Month award for September from NewBridge Bank. Clements teaches English and advance-placement English and broadcasting to juniors and seniors at Lexington Senior High School. She received a $1,000 cash award.

In May, she was selected as Teacher of the Year for the Lexington City Schools.

Anthony J. Vrsecky III of Winston-Salem, a sophomore at Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, N.Y., has been accepted into Pratt's industrial-design program. Students who wish to major in industrial design are reviewed for acceptance by the department at the end of their freshman year.

Antonio Wardlow has been accepted for the fall 2008 semester at Bethel College in McKenzie, Tenn. He is the son of Anthony and Michelle Wardlow of Winston-Salem, and will major in physical education and play on the Bethel football team.

Carolynn MacDonald of Winston-Salem graduated from Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Ala.

Bonnie Gabard Pope, the director of nursing, and William J. Schneider, the director of institutional effectiveness at Forsyth Technical Community College, have been selected to participate in the N.C. Community College Leadership Program, class of 2008-09. The program was developed to provide leadership training to faculty and staff from the 58 institutions comprising the N.C. Community College System and the central office.

IN THE MILITARY

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Christina D. Beal recently began a seven-month deployment to the U.S. Navy's 5th and 6th Fleet area of operations in support of Maritime Security Operations and the Global War on Terror. The Marines and sailors are adjusting to life aboard ship.

Beal is the daughter of Judy Lecompte of Pfafftown and is a 2004 graduate of North Forsyth High School. She joined the Navy in February 2005.

Army Pvt. Christopher D. Ponce has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Ponce is the son of Delores Ponce of Kernersville and is a 2005 graduate of East Forsyth High School.

Airman Charles E. Samuels has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Lisa Scaife of Charlotte. His grandparents are Zavious and Sharon Pratt of Winston Salem. Samuels is a 2007 graduate of Reagan High School.

IN SCOUTING

Quentin Spinks of Boy Scout Troop 421, sponsored by the Francisco Ruritan Club, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout during a ceremony on Sept. 11.

For his Eagle project, Quentin planned, organized and supervised the building of playground equipment and landscaping for a safe children's area at Francisco Presbyterian Church.

Quentin is a Senior Patrol Leader of the troop, and is the son of Robert and Amy Spinks. He is a senior at North Stokes High School and plans to attend Guilford Technical Community College after graduation.

IN OTHER AREAS

Grandview Garden Club won first place for its flower bed at the Pfafftown Post Office on Yadkinville Road. The award was given by Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful Inc., the City of Winston-Salem's Vegetation Management Division, and the Garden Club Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The award is given for the most beautiful and best-maintained flower beds in the flower-bed program. This is the first year that Grandview has participated in the program.

Second place went to Bill Tribby for his flower bed at Brantley Street and Hawthorne Road, and third place went to the Woodberry Forest Neighborhood Association for its flower bed at the entrance to the neighborhood.

Three groups received honorable-mention awards: the Hope Valley Garden Club for its flower bed at the entrance to the Hope Valley neighborhood; Oaklawn Baptist Church, for its flower bed along Kernersville Road in front of the church; and the Robinhood Trails Neighborhood Association for its flower bed at York, Archer and Peacehaven roads.

□ Forty-seven schools have been recognized by Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful Inc. for their beautification and environmental-education efforts during the past year. Judges are from Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful, the Garden Club Council and the city of Winston-Salem

Clean & Green flags and certificates went to 12 schools. The elementary-school winners were Children's Center, Cook, Easton, Hall-Woodward, Ibraham, and Lewisville. Middle-school winners were Hanes, Meadowlark, and Paisley. High-school winners were Carter Vocational, Mount Tabor and Reagan.

There were 35 top-scoring Campus Excellence winners this year. These are role- model schools. Each received the Clean & Green flag as well as a plaque and a tree. Elementary-school winners were Ashley, Bolton, Brunson, Cash, Clemmons, Downtown, Griffith, Kernersville, Konnoak, Latham, Meadowlark, North Hills, Old Richmond, Old Town, Rural Hall, Sedge Garden, Sherwood Forest, South Fork, Southwest, Speas, Union Cross, Vienna, Walkertown, Marvin Ward, and Whitaker. Middle-school winners were East Forsyth, Jefferson, Kernersville, Northwest, Southeast and Wiley. High-school winners were East Forsyth, Reynolds, West Forsyth and the UNC School of the Arts High School.
