A Lexington man died last night in a single-car accident, the N.C. Highway Patrol said today.
Stephen Eugene Wade, 19, of 7437 Old U.S. 52, was driving south on Old U.S. 52, about three miles south of Lexington, when his car came onto a left curve, ran off the right side of the road and hit an abutment of an overpass. The car came back on the road, then went off the right side and burst into flames, Trooper Richard Simmons of the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
Wade was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he later died.
Wade was going 75 mph at the time of the accident, Simmons said. The speed limit is 55. The Highway Patrol is waiting for results from the medical examiner to see if alcohol was involved, Simmons said.
